A visit to downtown New Haven, CT is like a visit to a time gone by... well if you look at their traffic signals, that is! At nearly every intersection downtown you can find at least one if not two historical 4-way traffic signals in use. Most street corners have two 3-color light assemblies arranged on opposite street corners providing 2 signals for each direction. These are, for the most part, overheads but resemble the setup that used to rule NYC. two signal assemblies for each intersection located catty-corner to each other.
Each and every signal I saw in New Haven utilizes LED signal heads.... yes... INCLUDING the old 4-ways... instead of replacing them, the city has simply updated them... which tells me with much delight, that you'll be able to travel through downtown New Haven for many years to come and witness one the largest collections of old 4 way signals still being used to route traffic through the city's busy streets. Below you can see a sampling of the 4-ways that New Haven has to offer. I couldn't take pictures of all that I saw because there are just so many of them in use.
....
All of the pictures you will see on this page were taken on July 11, 2003. About half of the old 4-ways that I encountered appeared to be mfd. by Eagle. The rest--which have a very stout appearance and an odd cutaway visor--are mfd. by Marbelite (thanks to Francis Khoury for helping me identify the marbelites). I was looking for some of those aesthetically pleasing Crouse Hinds lights once I noticed there were so many of these old relics, however I found not a one.
The signal above in not burned out... I actually snapped it in yellow phase, but the picture did not show the yellow illumination very well.
A nice old signal near the Neat Lounge that has an unused 4th section below the green section.
As mentioned before, most of the signals I saw were arranged in an archaic 2-per-intersection, catty corner fashion. However I spied a couple of "span-wire" setups as well, these were all aided by other single assemblies in the intersection.
Another installation with unused 4th sections on the bottom. I noticed there are a LOT of these 4 section lights in the city. One that I saw had a left turn arrow in it, but I was unable to get a good shot of it.
Old 4-way with red-yellow-green sections LED like all the others, but also there is an odd lens in the bottom 4th section of this assembly that did not appear to light for any reason.
Random installations
This is possibly my favorite installation in the city. These two are all the assemblies for this 4 way intersection (3 lanes, 2 lanes opposing), but instead of the poles being catty-cornered... they are both on immediately neighboring corners... one sticks out further than the other.
