August 13, 2009: Update:
After submitting my proposal
to ConnDOT, I was informed that the use of
color was not going to happen, and that the current shield,
they feel most represents the suggestions of the MUTCD. I respect and
understand their feeling on the
matter, and there is currently no plan to make any changes to state route
markers.
I have one final proposal to offer on a CT Route Marker that maintains the
elements of the current
shield that are so important to ConnDOT. Please see the pictures below the
get a feel for it.
All 24" Square shields would use FHWA font in the the proper series for the
width to fit in the square
with a 12" height, and the 36" square shields would use 18" high
numerals as are the standard in CT now.
I have to point out one thing
that's interesting. ConnDOT tries to follow MUTCD guidelines as closely
as possible, but the MUTCD states that 3-digit highways should be numbered on an
elongated sign
(so as it would be practical to maintain the use of Series C and D for fonts,
and not have to use series B
which is very narrow). MUTCD states that 3-digit signs should be 24X30 and
36X45, not the 24X24
and 36X36 square used for 1- and 2-digit roads. Just thought I'd point it
out.

Now would someone please tell
me why the design shown here
isn't a fair compromise? I mean heck, it's nearly as bleeding-boring
as what we already have, but at least it's unique to our state.
